How To Build Out Your Keyword List

When preparing your Google AdWords campaign be sure to devote ample time and attention to building your keyword list.  

Often times companies become so anxious about driving traffic to their site that as a result they end up rushing through the most critical step of setting up their campaign and that is failing to build a keyword list of at least 100-200 search terms. 

Build out your keyword list buy identifying the most obvious keywords first including your company name and all product names.  Remember, a great place to find valuable keywords is in your Web site’s traffic statistics.

Other keyword variations you should consider are commonly misspelled words that relate to your business, abbreviations, acronyms, plural and singular forms, hyphenated and unhyphenated variations, various verb forms, related nouns, using adjectives in conjunction with a keyword, one and two word combos such as Web site and website, and using codes and numbers such as product numbers. 

Brainstorm with colleagues and friends to see if they come up with search terms you may have overlooked.  Ask them if they were looking for your company, what would they type in.  

Once you have a list created, the next step in developing even more keywords is by using a keyword tool.  Although there are free keyword tools available such as Yahoo! Keyword Selector Tool, my personal preference happens to be the world’s top search-engine keyword tool and that is Wordtracker.com.  You have to pay to use this one but it is well worth the price.  They have daily, weekly, monthly and yearly options. 

Read news articles on your particular industry.  Often times, keywords can be found in such articles that you may have overlooked. 

Keep in mind that specific keywords are more profitable than broad terms so the more granular (specific) you get with your search terms the better.
